THE BREAKDOWN

WHAT IS POWDER COAT?

You may have come across powder-coated objects like bicycles, cars, railings, and furniture and assumed they were simply painted with a special, thick paint. However, powder coat is distinct from traditional paint, and its unique characteristics set it apart.

Powder coat is composed of a fine, powdery dust, hence the name “Powder” coat. This powder is applied to metal products using a special process. Unlike paint, which requires a liquid solvent to carry the pigment and binder, powder coat is dry and does not contain any solvents. Instead, the powder particles are attracted to the metal surface through an electrostatic charge, creating a thick and even layer.

The powder coat process offers several advantages over traditional paint. One of the key benefits is its exceptional durability. The powder forms a strong bond with the metal, creating a protective layer that is more resistant to scratches, chipping, and fading compared to paint. This enhanced durability improves the overall corrosion resistance of the metal, extending the lifespan of the coated product.

In addition to its durability, powder coat provides a long-lasting and beautiful finish. The powder particles melt and fuse together during the curing process, creating a smooth and uniform coating. This results in a high-quality appearance that is resistant to fading, discoloration, and damage caused by UV rays, chemicals, and environmental elements. The powder coat finish retains its vibrant color and gloss for an extended period of time, much longer than that of traditional paint.

Overall, powder coat offers a superior alternative to traditional paint. Its durability, corrosion resistance, and long-lasting finish make it a popular choice for a wide range of applications, including automotive, industrial, and household products.

THE BREAKDOWN

our powder coating process

Our powder coating process at Legends Auto Boutique consists of three stages: preparing the metal, applying the powder coat, and baking to form a strong seal. While each step is crucial, we place particular emphasis on the careful execution of preparation and cleaning to achieve a flawless finish.

To begin, wheels, brake calipers, lift kit components, and other metal parts undergo meticulous preparation in our sandblasting room. This process effectively removes imperfections, smoothes out sharp corners, and creates a rough surface ideal for the powder coat to adhere to. This preparation stage is vital for achieving the perfect finish.

Next, the parts go through a comprehensive five-stage dip process. The first tank contains a heated and treated acid wash that eliminates any oil, dust, or mechanical debris from the surface. Tanks two and three are Reverse Osmosis water tanks that neutralize and remove any residual liquids from the first tank. Tank four involves a Zirconium rinse, which significantly enhances corrosion and rust resistance. The fifth tank provides a final rinse in RO water to ensure a clean and pristine surface.

Once the parts are prepped, they are hung up and passed through the drying oven. This specialized oven not only dries the parts but also subjects the metal to heat and subsequent cooling, a process known as "outgassing." Outgassing allows any trapped gas or air within the material to escape. By heating the metal, the material expands, and upon cooling, it contracts, effectively expelling the gas. Legends Auto Boutique strategically incorporates this step before the powder coat application to prevent any expelled gas from puncturing the powder coat surface.

After the metal has been heat dried and cooled, it is moved to our powder coat room, where the temperature and humidity are carefully controlled for optimal application. The parts are given an electrostatic charge and moved through the powder coat booth. Due to the metal's charge, the powder particles magnetically adhere to the surface, ensuring complete coverage.

Finally, the parts are transferred to a large oven, where the powder coat is "baked" onto the metal, creating a durable and long-lasting finish. Each step of this meticulous process is executed with precision to deliver the best possible outcome for our customers.

THE BREAKDOWN

WHY YOU NEED A POWDER COAT

Yeah, sure, you can paint metal. However, the better choice is a powder coat. Powder coat is not only more durable and cost-effective but also a quicker process. While both powder coating and painting involve extensive procedures, powder coating generally requires less time, allowing for faster turnaround and completion of projects.

It's important to note that when it comes to metal parts undergoing a color change, powder coating is a necessity. The unique properties of powder coat, such as its durability and ability to adhere to metal surfaces, make it the ideal choice for achieving vibrant, long-lasting color transformations.

At Legends Auto Boutique, we strongly recommend powder coating over traditional painting for metal parts. Our experience and expertise in powder coating ensure that you receive a high-quality, durable finish that will stand the test of time.
